From Farm to Yarn – Working with Local Wool
Did you know that Canada used to produce 90% of all the textiles we consumed? Now we produce less than 5% and most of the raw materials are sourced outside of Canada. This lecture will look at the social, political and environmental factors that changed our textile industry and what opportunities exist to revitalize the Canadian wool industry from a manufacturing and industry perspective.
This is a deep dive into the world of wool, how we use it, where it comes from and how understanding the science of wool production can improve our fibre arts practice. This workshop includes some ‘touch and feel’ portions with different breeds of sheep wool. This lecture explores the research behind the new book The True Cost of Wool by Anna Hunter published in June 2025.
