Breed Specific at Long Way Homestead
In April 2023 my first book Sheep, Shepherd & Land was released. It is my love letter to the Canadian wool industry - sharing the story of farmers raising breed-specific flocks across the country and doing innovate things with wool and land management.
I wanted to encourage more exploration of the sheep breeds we raise in Canada and how to use their beautiful wool. I worked with Amanda Fyfe to illustrate the breeds I explored in my book and now I’m excited to share these with you.
I encourage you to dive deep into sheep breeds and see how it can transform your fibre arts practice and connect you to local farms and mills!
Leo the llama was our favourite adorkable llama for many years. Sadly we lost him to heart disease this past February.
I’m so thankful for the talented Amanda Fyfe who did this drawing of leo for us and now he can join me for my morning coffee! And to Karri Munn-Venn of Leystone farm who put her llama on a mug and inspired me!
This cermaic mug is 11-oz. capacity and dishwasher and microwave safe.
We ship using Canada Post or USPS and will always refund any overcharge on shipping. We ship things once a week.

Ever wonder about the journey your yarn took before reaching your needles, hook or loom? Or about where the wool in your winter sweater came from? The truth might surprise you.
In this eye-opening exploration, shepherd and mill owner Anna Hunter reveals the startling reality behind Canada's wool industry: While Canadian farmers produce millions of pounds of wool annually, about 90% is shipped overseas—and around 95% of the yarn Canadian crafters use is imported, according to the latest available data.
Follow the wool as Hunter traces two distinct paths Canadian wool might take: The challenging route of domestic processing through Canada's limited infrastructure, and the opaque journey of wool sold as a global commodity, where traceability disappears across international borders.
Through vivid storytelling and meticulous research, Hunter delves into the environmental impact of shipping wool thousands of kilometres, the true labour involved in yarn production, and the economic pressures leading farmers to view their wool as worthless—sometimes choosing to burn it rather than trying to sell it.
But this isn't a doom-and-gloom book. Hunter has a vision for a vibrant future for Canadian wool. Meet the innovators rebuilding regional wool economies across Canada, creating alternatives that honour the connection between consumer, shepherd, and sheep. Learn how your purchasing choices can support this reinvigoration, and along the way begin to appreciate that the wool in your hands can be part of something truly beneficial from start to finish.
For knitters and yarn crafters who care about the stories behind their stitches and the impact of their craft, and for general consumers who want to know where their textiles come from and how they can make informed choices that bolster environmentally beneficial regional economies, this book offers an essential understanding of what "local" truly means—and how our choices can help reshape an industry from the ground up.

Rideau wool is considered a 'variable' wool, some can be fine, long and lustrous, while other can be more lofty and down. Rideau can be white, grey, brown and even black.
The wearability of Rideau wool often depends on the specific animal or flock it comes from, some can be worn next to the skin as shawls or hats, and some is better suited for outerwear like sweaters or mittens. The wool can have a brilliant lustre and takes dye well. It is a great wool for felting

About Rambouillet Wool
Rambouillet is incredibly soft and has amazing handle. It is a great wool for those next to the skin projects and will feel great to work with. Some folks say that rambouillet is like Merino but with a bit more bounce. Because of it's slightly disorganized crimp it provides great elasticity and beautiful loft.
Rambouillet does not have the same lustre as merino, but it will take dye well with almost a matte appearance. Rambouillet will felt very easily and is great for needle or wet felting projects. Rambouillet is a great choice for your baby items, and next to the skin projects!

About Clun Forest Wool
Clun Forest is raised for meat, but the wool is not to be overlooked. It is a very uniform wool and is considered a down wool – meaning a short staple, low luster and lots of elastic crimp. Clun Forest wool is always white and is very dense.
The wool from Clun Forest sheep will be hard wearing and also very full bodies. It is good for flannels, hard wearing mittens, tweeds or felts. It is also great for stuffing for pillows or duvets as it will maintain it's loft!
Enjoy using our ‘mill-ends’ yarn for all of your craft projects.
The bundle includes 200g in total of mini-skeins of yarn of different weights and ply’s.
The mill ends are 100% wool yarn and come from the end of our cones/bobbins in our mill. They have been rinsed and are ready to use. The mill-ends yarn are white or slightly off-white.

** we now have coloured rambouillet batting** Our rambouillet farmer purchased a dark coloured merino ram from the USA and cross-bred it with his white rambouillet sheep. The result is the most beautiful coloured rambouillet sheep with beautiful dark fibre, we blend the dark and the white rambouillet to create these batts.
Sometimes called the 'french merino' rambouillet wool is known for its soft, fine fibres but with more resilience and bounce than its merino counterparts. It is a great wool to wear next to your skin, while also providing warmth and strength. Great for hand spinning and felting and dyeing.

How to clean your wool bedding
Watch this VIDEO on how to wash our wool bedding.
Often we worry about washing wool because it has the ability to felt (or shrink) thankfully wool is naturally self-cleaning, so it doesn't need regular washing. We recommend reading through these washing tips and handling the washing of your wool items with care.
Wool will felt because of drastic heat changes and agitation. So we avoid hot water and any sort of wringing or agitation.
Use the power of the sun:
For general care and cleaning of your wool bedding we recommend airing it often (twice a year).
Hang or lay out your wool bedding on a breezy, sunny day for at least 3 hours. Bacteria is killed by the natural UV light from the sun and will make your bedding fresh once again.
Spot Clean
The best way to deal with a stain or spill on your wool bedding is to spot clean the area.
Use a mild soap (like Eucalan wool wash) and lukewarm water and gently wipe or dab off the stain on your blanket or duvet with a cloth.
Hang or lay flat to dry outside
Full wash
Fill your bathtub or large sink with lukewarm water and a mild soap (like Eucalan wool wash)
Gently place your blanket in the tub or sink and let it soak. You can gently push it under the water until it is fully submerged (30 – 60 minutes)
Drain the water out. Do not twist, wring or agitate the blanket, you can gently press down the blanket to remove excess water.
Lay the blanket on a dry towel and gently roll it up to remove extra water.
Hang or lay flat on a drying rack in the sunshine to dry (do not use a clothes dryer).

Water Retention
Wool pellets can hold up to 20 times their weight in water. Wool holds onto atmospheric moisture and releases it when conditions turn dry again. This can reduce the amount of watering, but also protects plant roots from over watering.
Aeration
Wool pellets will expand in water and will add aeration to your soils. They will increase the oxygen levels in your soil.
Natural Fertilizer
Wool pellets slowly break down in your garden and soil, and release their nutrients back to the soil. Wool is very high in nitrogen and carbon and will also add calcium, magnesium, iron, sulphur and other nutrients to the soil.
Slug & Pest Repellent
Wool is a natural repellent to slugs, some pests and weeds. When used around the base of your plants it can keep them protected and safe.
Recycling Nutrients & Reducing Waste
Our wool pellets are diverting wool waste from landfills and returning these nutrients back to the soil.
We work with Canadian Sheep farmers to add value to their wool, and pay them a higher rate for their wool.
These special HOLIDAY sized wool pellet bags feature 250g of our wool pellets, and instruction card. They are perfect for gift giving and can be used in all your indoor house plants.

An autographed copy of my first book Sheep, Shepherd & Land with Photographs by Christel Lanthier
Across Canada, small-scale sheep farmers are on a mission to reinvigorate the domestic wool industry, raising sheep breeds that thrive in their regional climate and land base. Learn about farmers' motivations, their dedication to climate-forward practices, and their passion for developing the infrastructure to ensure their wool is processed, milled, and used by businesses and hobbyists locally. Journey alongside sheep farmer and wool educator Anna Hunter to explore the unique characteristics of the sheep breeds being raised from British Columbia to the Maritimes, and how the qualities of the wool from each is best suited to make items from garments to cold-weather accessories to home goods.

Long Way Homestead Calendars featuring our flock of Shetland Sheep and guardian llamas. With beautiful photos, this calendar gives you a small sense of what raising sheep throughout the year looks like.

Calendars are mailed via Canada Post and will be mailed out by October 10th, 2025.
About our Calendar Sales
The sales from our yearly calendars goes directly to purchasing hay for our flock. Your support allows us to keep our flock fed all winter!
Before I actually raised sheep I knew very little about how much they eat. I had this naive idea that if you have green grass, you're fine. I had no idea about how much forage they actually need and what is involved in getting that nutrition.
I won't go into relative feed value and proteins etc in this post, but this is a broad overview of what is involved in keeping sheep fed and healthy.
We feed our sheep on pasture from June 1 to hopefully October 1st. But if it's a dry year, or a wet year, or if we accidentally over-graze our pasture, then we run out of enough grass by early September and we move to hay. We do not have hay land (meaning we have to purchase hay from a different farm).
Here is what we plan for:
Each sheep needs around 4lbs of hay a day (this is a rough estimate and not looking at the feed value).
We feed small square bales for the most part. Each small square weighs roughly 50lbs
We have 38 sheep to feed all winter long. This is 152lbs per day or 3 square bales.
We have had a great grazing year and we anticipate we will need to start feeding hay by September 15th
September 15th – June 1st is 275 (ish) days of feeding hay. Which brings our total up to 825 bales for the next year.
We plan now so that we can work with variables that we have no control over in the future. Climate change, drought, flood, even pandemics are some of those variables that affect our livelihood.
Our 2023 Sheep Calendar is being released today and all the sales of the calendar will be going directly to the cost of our feed for the sheep this year.
Two calendar sales will feed our sheep for one full day! It may be a small item for you, but it has a huge impact for us!!
I wanted to create a fun and informative colouring book all about sheep & wool, as part of our wool education and advocacy work.
I teamed up with Sam Bradd of Drawing Change to create some whimsical illustrations of sheep and wool processing!
16 pages of colouring and packed with information about sheep, wool and how it is transformed into our clothing.
The colouring book is 8” x 10.5” on a sturdy 80lb paper with saddle stitching.
the book ships as oversized lettermail to Canada and the USA. We have wholesale options available for schools, 4H clubs, and yarn stores. Please contact info@longwayhomestead.com for details on wholesale.

What is CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a system in which both the benefits and the risks of agriculture production is shared by the shareholders within the community. Most often the consumers will purchase 'shares' from a local farm at the beginning of the growing season, thus ensuring the viability for the farmer. The consumer will then receive vegetables, fruit, grains and/or meat throughout the year according to what has been grown and what is in season.
A fibre CSA is a chance for knitters, spinners, dyers and crafters to have a closer connection to where their wool comes from and what is involved in bringing it to the consumer.
By purchasing a 'share' every year you are supporting the raising of the sheep, the shearing, the cleaning and the end product. You also get to witness the process - through visiting the farm, or watching on social media. This provides a connection with the sheep and also supports small, local, Canadian farmers.
If you want to try natural dyeing at home these kits are for you! They include:
200m/100g of worsted weight yarn
alum (mordant)
Natural dye materials and info card (dyes grown on our farm)
dyeing instruction card
This is a great introduction to Natural Dyeing and using all locally grown, manufactured yarn and dye stuff. Easy to follow instructions!
These dye kits ship in Canada in pre-paid shipping boxes. They ship USPS to the USA.
This is a 20g package of dried Cosmos (Cosmos sulpherus) dye flowers. Grown on our farm in Eastern Manitoba. Cosmos will produce a beautiful range of light orange to deep orange, it will also provide deep colours of green and brown when over-dyed. The flowers come in a lined and sealed paper bag.
These are recommended amounts to achieve a range of colour 10g - 20g of dried flowers per 100g of fibre.
Colour Fastness: Cosmos has good light-fastness and great wash-fastness
Possible Modifiers: Common modifiers to use alongside cosmos are indigo (bright greens) and ferrous or Iron (darker greens). It is recommended to over-dye only the lighter shades of yellow to ensure green hues.
This is a 20g package of dried Dyers Coreopsis dye flowers. Grown on our farm in Eastern Manitoba. Dyers Coreopsis flowers will produce beautiful shades of orange – brown depending on quantity of plant stuff and modifiers. For deep oranges use a concentrated amount of flower heads. The flowers come in a lined and sealed paper bag.
These are recommended amounts to achieve a range of colour
10g - 20g of dried flowers per 100g of fibre
Colour Fastness: Dyer's Coreopsis has good light-fastness and good wash-fastness
Possible Modifiers: Coreopsis dye is more sensitive to changes in the pH. Acidic modifiers will change the shade to more of a yellow. A small amount of soda ash or other alkali will bring out the red shade.
w to ensure green hues.
This is a 20g package of dried Black Knight Scabiosa dye flowers grown on our farm in eastern Manitoba. Black Knight Scabiosa will produce a beautiful range of blue/green shades. The flowers come in a lined and sealed paper bag.
These are recommended amounts to achieve a range of colour 10g - 20g of dried flowers per 100g of fibre
Colour Fastness: Black Knight Scabiosa has medium light-fastness and good wash-fastness
Possible Modifiers: Black Knight Scabiosa is sensitive to pH so adding an acidic modifier will result in a pink/purple shade and an alkali modifier will go more blue/grey.
