Manitoba Research on Wool Pellets
If you have never heard of wool pellets - then don’t go any farther without first reading this.
It doesn’t take long in any conversation I have about the future of Canadian wool before I bring up the opportunity we have to revalue wool through wool pellets.
And I’m very excited to share some new research that I contributed to through the University of Manitoba Sustainability in Action Facility.
The research project compared the efficacy of wool pellets compared to hydrogel (a plastic polymer used to retain moisture in horticulture).
Spoiler alert - they both retained moisture in plants, but the pellets ALSO contributed to increased biomass (plus pellets aren’t plastic).
Check out the preliminary report here. It is a quick read and the longer report will be coming out in fall 2025.
This is exciting news for wool - and hopefully will be an incentive for any greenhouses or city green spaces still using hydrogel to switch to wool pellets.
